Road Legal Quad Bikes
"What is Road Legal" is a difficult question to answer due to the amount of changes in guidelines over the years by the UK Government. But, if you follow some basic guidelines you should be able to see what is right and what is required when thinking about buying a Road Legal Quad Bike. The Basics
- Lights - Every Quad Bike should have lights, even some of the off road have lights as standard. They need to be at least side lights, main beam and high beam for the front - tail light and brake light for the back - indicators front and rear.
- Tyres - Some of the manufactured tyres for do not comply to British MOT Standards. Always make sure that there is a "CE" mark on the outer case of the tyre.
- Brakes - A standard braking system which operates both the front wheels and rear wheels should be working. The majority of have a hand controlled front break and foot controlled rear.

Body Work - Over each wheel there should be a mudguard or panel which is intact. If the panel is broken and you are stopped by the police there is a chance you could be charged for using a defective vehicle.
Exhaust - A standard exhaust system that is fitted by the manufacturer from new (Stock Exhaust) does not have to have a "CE" logo. But, if the exhaust has been changed for an after market system then it should have the necessary "CE" sign to prove it meets the requirements for noise. Although that is the basics you will need to look for, the art will be making sure that you buy the right machine from the right person - so always make sure that you ask plenty of questions regarding the Quad Bike and qualify the seller. Finally, if you have any doubt about the Quad Bike you are interested in, get it checked out by both making sure it is clear in the insurance and financial register (HPi) and asking someone who is mechanically trained.
